FAQ

Do you accept late registration for the art classes in San Marcos or at the schools you run programs at?

San Marcos Art Classes: Yes, Sign up any time! We will prorate the month for you.
After School Classes: It depends on if room is available in the class. It's up to the teacher - and is determined on a case by case basis.

How many children are in each class in general?

The art classes generally have 12-18 children in each class, and we usually have a qualified assistant or parent volunteer. If a class gets more than 15 children enrolled, I generally will split the group in two by grades, and offer 2 ONE hour classes back to back for each group. For our after school programs, Piano has a 6 child maximum and each teacher usually set their own limit or minimum. It's up to the teacher - and is determined on a case by case basis.

What classes do you offer/can you offer?

We can offer any class that you would like as long as their is a need among parents. You can help us organize an art or academic class for your group at our location- just ask us!

There is a one-time $25 registration fee due per family. Tuition is paid monthly. Sign up any time throughout the month and pay a pro-rated price for the month. Tuition is paid monthly and amount due is based on the number of days your child will have lass in the month. All supplies are included in the monthly tuition.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer a 2nd class or 2nd sibling registered discount of $5 per month. Homeschool families have a discounted annual registration fee of $15 (instead of $25). We also offer scholarships based on creative and behavioral variables after a child is enrolled for one month of art classes.

Will I be able to observe my child under a teacher's direction in school?

Parents of both after school programs and on-site art classes can observe the 1st class of the month or session. We also allow parents to sit outside the classroom anytime!

What if I pay for x amount classes and have to miss one?

For the classes that are offered at various schools (not our art schools), there are no refunds or make-ups. For classes at our art studio in San Marcos, you can miss one class and make it up provided you call us ahead of time. Make-ups must be scheduled within 30 days.

What types of materials do you use?

All of the art materials are both professional and non-toxic. We use everything from prismacolor markers, watercolor pencils and paint trays...to sharpies to crayola markers, paints etc. If you are looking to purchase any, please let us know.

Will you tell me if my child has any talent?

All children have an innate artistic & creative ability. Our focus is to nurture the artist from within, not to make your child a Picasso or a Mozart. If your child shows exceptional & gifted talent, your teacher will be sure to let you know. We show all the children how to feel creative and encourage self-expression.

What is a directed drawing?

A directed drawing is one method we use to teach your child to draw step-by-step, while at the same time we encourage them to go off on their own to complete their drawing. It is a very good method to train your children to SEE things differently and to not be overwhelmed by the BIG picture.

Do you work with children with special needs?

Although we hate to be the one to label children, most of the teachers have taught children that were diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, Mild Autism & children with physical disabilities. We find children with "special needs" challenging and we also encourage a diverse classroom of all types of children. Please talk to your teacher to see what their individual comfort level is.

How do you handle disciplining children?

That is probably something you will have to see in person with your child's teacher. We believe in gaining the children's trust through humor & nurturing creativity. Once that is established, disciplining is usually not even necessary. When a teacher encounters a situtation where a child does not respond to a firm but polite discipline, they will be removed from the class so as not to disturb and distract the others. We always try to "re-direct" the negative behavior by making them a little helper, or we pull the child aside to ask them if there is something else bothering them. Most discipline problems that occur in our classes are usually do to a child's sensitivity to the newness of they way they are learning, intimidation because of the levels of other children, or because a parent has put pressure on them to do "good" or "behave" during class. Children have their own instincts and abilities and they need to be given the freedom to act on those and work to please themselves and in turn, the parents.

If your child engage in any minor, moderate or severe behavior activity, we do create incident reports, discuss them to you and give you a copy for your records.

Do you offer any private or group lessons in people's homes?

Art 4 Children offers this on a case by case basis if we have an available teacher to meet your needs. Just ask us!
